SUMMARY:Federal consolidated interim storage facilities for commercial highly radioactive wastes
DESCRIPTION:The U.S. Department of Energy is accepting public comments on its latest ploy to open highly radioactive waste consolidated interim storage facilities\, under the ruse of “consent-based siting.” A week ago\, Beyond Nuclear provided answers to DOE’s own list of questions\, which can be used to fashion your own comments for submission. Now\, we have prepared additional sample comments\, covering numerous very significant aspects of the issue DOE did not even ask about. This week’s round of sample comments is concise (see below)\, with additional background provided\, depending on how much time you have. Please help defend health\, safety\, security\, the environment\, and environmental justice\, by pushing back against DOE’s latest bid to open dangerous\, de facto permanent surface storage\, parking lot dumps.

Every effort will be made to inform the winner and top 2 runner-ups. \nAbout National Radioactive Waste Coalition \nThe National Radioactive Waste Coalition (NRWC) works to bring attention to\, and rallies for action around\, the dangers of radioactive nuclear waste. We are working to permanently block the Yucca Mountain repository\, to stop consolidated interim storage\, to store high-level wastes as close as possible to their sites of generation in “hardened” safe-as-possible storage\, and to reduce the inherent dangers of high-level wastes at decommissioned nuclear plants and other sites. \nThrough collaboration amongst our member organizations across the country\, the NRWC is working to ensure the dangers of radioactive waste are managed in a responsible\, equitable\, and sustainable manner. \n \n \n \n \n \n The Coalition is made up of environmental\, anti-nuclear\, and social/environmental justice groups in the United States. \nList of member groups of National Radioactive Waste Coalition \n1) Alliance for Environmental Strategies \n2) Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League \n3) Cape Downwinders \n4) Citizens Awareness Network \n5) Citizens Action Coalition \n6) Citizens’ Environmental Coalition \n7) Citizens Resistance at Fermi Two (CRAFT) \n8) Concerned Citizens for Nuclear Safety \n9) Council on Intelligent Energy & Conservation Policy (CIECP) \n10) Fairewinds Energy Education Nonprofit \n11) Greenaction for Health and Environmental Justice \n12) Green State Solutions \n13) Healthy Environment Alliance of Utah \n14) Heart of America Northwest \n15) Hudson River Sloop Clearwater\, Inc. \n16) Indian Point Safe Energy Coalition \n17) Manhattan Project for a Nuclear-Free World \n18) Multicultural Alliance for a Safe Environment \n19) Native Community Action Council \n20) Nevada Nuclear Waste Task Force \n21) North American Water Office \n22) Nuclear Energy Information Service (NEIS) \n23) Nuclear Information and Resource Service (NIRS) \n24) Nuclear Watch New Mexico \n25) Nuclear Watch South \n26) Nukewatch \n27) Occupy Bergen County \n28) Safe Energy Rights Group (SEnRG) \n29) San Clemente Green \n30) San Luis Obispo Mothers for Peace \n31) Shut Down Indian Point Now \n32) Snake River Alliance \n33) Southwest Research and Information Center \n34) Stop the Algonquin Pipeline Expansion \n35) Sustainable Energy & Economic Development (SEED) Coalition \n36) Uranium Watch \n37) Vermont Yankee Decommissioning Alliance
