SUMMARY:Nuclear Fuel Chain Part 3: Transportation
DESCRIPTION:Radioactive waste specialist Kevin Kamps joins us to discuss the transportation of nuclear materials through communities on our nation’s roads\, rails\, and barges. If a temporary storage facility is opened in New Mexico\, how will all the nation’s commercial nuclear reactors send their waste? After the East Palestine derailment disaster\, could a similar accident occur with a nuclear waste shipment? We have a lot of questions. Join us if you do too. \nThe Nuclear Fuel Chain lectures seek to expose the environmental injustices\, costs\, and dangers in each link along the nuclear fuel chain. Nuclear energy is not carbon-free; it’s a false solution. We’ll explore all the links in the fuel chain and how each endangers our water\, land\, and bodies. \nKevin Kamps \nKevin Kamps works with Beyond Nuclear and lives in Takoma Park\, Maryland. He has extensive knowledge about radioactive waste generation and storage risks at reactor sites and transportation through communities across the country. Before Beyond Nuclear\, Kevin was the Radioactive waste specialist for Nuclear Information and Resource Service. Kevin has traveled to Chernobyl in Ukraine and founded a Michigan chapter of the international Chernobyl Children’s Project\, which brings child victims of the Chernobyl accident to the United States for medical help. He has also worked with radiation victims in the U.S. and Canada\, including those living near uranium mines and downwind from the Nevada Nuclear Weapons Test Site. \nRegister for the virtual webinar here and bring your questions!

SUMMARY:Enrichment? HALEU? Virtual Scoping Meetings Announced
DESCRIPTION:The DOE has issued a notice of intent for a High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium (HALEU) Availability Program by launching the scoping process for an environmental impact statement. \nEnriching uranium to make HALEU poses serious nuclear weapons proliferation risks and puts us in danger. The fuel would be enriched to bomb grade or near bomb grade—20% uranium 235\, supposedly for nuclear power\, but easily shifted to weapons \nThere will be three virtual meetings on June 21st\, at 6pm\, 8pm\, and 10pm ET (4pm\, 6pm\, 8pm MT) . Register HERE. \nDOE will “provide information on the NEPA process and proposed action\, gather oral comments on the scope of the draft EIS\, and enhance opportunities for public participation.” \nFrom the Notice of Intent… \nThe development of a commercial HALEU fuel cycle would involve: (1) uranium ore production ( e.g.\, in situ-recovery)\, (2) conversion of the uranium ore into enrichment feed (converting the uranium ore into hexafluoride suitable for enrichment)\, (3) enrichment to HALEU (in particular\, HALEU enriched to at least 19.75 and less than 20 weight percent U–235)\, (4) deconversion (conversion of the uranium hexafluoride into forms suitable for fuel fabrication)\, (5) transportation services for HALEU ( e.g.\, from the enrichment site to the deconversion site)\, and (6) storage capability. The EIS will evaluate implementation of the Proposed Action of facilitating the commercialization of HALEU production and DOE’s acquisition of HALEU\, including the direct and reasonably foreseeable indirect effects of that acquisition.

SUMMARY:Comment Deadline for Molten Chloride Reactor Experiment
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Energy (DOE) opened public comment for the Bill Gates Molten Chloride Reactor Experiment draft Environmental Assessment (EA). \nBeatrice Brailsford and the OGs of Idaho Nuclear Activism. \nInitially DOE gave the public only 14 days to obtain\, read\, and comment on the EA. The Snake River Alliance\, our members\, and allies requested DOE extend the public comment period. The day before the comments were due\, DOE agreed to provide an additional 14 days. \nFuel to feed this molten chloride nuclear reactor experiment comes from highly enriched uranium feedstock DOE has at Idaho National Lab. The waste streams created stay in Idaho\, and put workers and our sole-source freshwater aquifer at risk. No power goes to Idaho homes. Idaho is merely a testbed for Gates’ Wyoming Terrapower project. TerraPower is currently stalled\, primarily because Russia is the main source of HALEU sanctions currently prohibit purchase. \nLearn more and read the EA HERE! Comments are due April 14th.

SUMMARY:Nuclear Fuel Chain Part II: Uranium Enrichment\, Fuel Fabrication\, and Reprocessing
DESCRIPTION:The Nuclear Fuel Chain Lecture Series explores and analyzes the entire fuel chain\, from uranium mining to radioactive waste storage. Join us in February for Part Two of the series\, Uranium Enrichment\, Nuclear Fuel Fabrication\, and Reprocessing. Register HERE or below for your unique link.  \nPat Marida \nWe are honored to have with us two experts on the topic\, Pat Marida and Terry Lodge. \nPat Marida\nPat has been an antinuclear activist since the 1980s\, when she was a volunteer staff person and Board Member of the Ohio Nuclear Weapons Freeze Campaign.  For 25 years she held various volunteer positions in the Sierra Club\, including serving on the Executive Committee of the Ohio Sierra Club and chairing the Central Ohio Sierra Club for 9 years.  She helped found the Ohio Sierra Club Nuclear Free Committee in 2010 and served as its chair through 2020.  She is currently a coordinator with the Ohio Nuclear Free Network\, having helped start that organization two years ago.  She is a retired pharmacist living in Columbus\, Ohio. \nTerry Lodge \nTerry Lodge \nTerry is a longtime environmental and civil rights lawyer in Toledo\, Ohio who in a career of 43+ years has represented grassroots activists and protesters opposing nuclear power and nuclear weapons\, mountaintop removal\, fracking and its radioactive waste\, war and discrimination in employment. He values the free speech\, association and protest rights of activists above every other constitutional right and worries about the privatized censorship of dissent on corporate social media as well as the “money equals megaphone” problem amplified by the Citizens’ United court decision. \nTerry currently represents scores of activists formally opposing the construction of two “interim” irradiated nuclear fuel dumps\, one in Texas and one in New Mexico\, and is pressing a lawsuit over the nuclear weapons implications of manufacturing high assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) at a Department of Energy plant site in southeastern Ohio. He’s also assisting a small but tough group of activists in Erwin\, Tennessee who’re outing a local factory’s public health-threatening radiation leaks and nuclear weapons connections in an NRC license amendment case. \nPlease register ahead of time and come with your questions or submit them to communications@snakeriveralliance.org\, subject line : ASK. \n Read more from the Ohio Nuclear Free Network\n Uranium: Enrichment\, Nuclear Fuel Fabrication\, and More \n How Nuclear Power Worsens Climate Change \nLearn more about the nuclear legacy of the Portsmouth Nuclear site in Ohio. \n Read about Ohio\, Centrus and the Nuclear Bomb. \n Portsmouth to Convert Depleted Uranium for Warfare \n Health Risk to Local Residents from the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant. \n Uranium: Mining and Milling

SUMMARY:COMMENTS due: Consent-Based Siting Process to Identify Federal CIS
DESCRIPTION:The Office of Nuclear Energy (NE)\, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)\, requestsinformation on how to site Federal facilities for the temporary\, consolidated storage of spentnuclear fuel using a consent-based approach. DOE anticipates that communities; governmentsat the local\, State\, and Tribal levels; members of the public; energy and environmental justicegroups; organizations or corporations; and other stakeholders may be interested in respondingto this Request for Information (RFI). We especially welcome insight from people\, communities\,and groups that have historically not been well-represented in these discussions. Responses tothe RFI will inform development of a consent-based siting process\, overall strategy for anintegrated waste management system\, and possibly a funding opportunity.

SUMMARY:Federal consolidated interim storage facilities for commercial highly radioactive wastes
DESCRIPTION:The U.S. Department of Energy is accepting public comments on its latest ploy to open highly radioactive waste consolidated interim storage facilities\, under the ruse of “consent-based siting.” A week ago\, Beyond Nuclear provided answers to DOE’s own list of questions\, which can be used to fashion your own comments for submission. Now\, we have prepared additional sample comments\, covering numerous very significant aspects of the issue DOE did not even ask about. This week’s round of sample comments is concise (see below)\, with additional background provided\, depending on how much time you have. Please help defend health\, safety\, security\, the environment\, and environmental justice\, by pushing back against DOE’s latest bid to open dangerous\, de facto permanent surface storage\, parking lot dumps.

We are working to permanently block the Yucca Mountain repository\, to stop consolidated interim storage\, to store high-level wastes as close as possible to their sites of generation in “hardened” safe-as-possible storage\, and to reduce the inherent dangers of high-level wastes at decommissioned nuclear plants and other sites. \nThrough collaboration amongst our member organizations across the country\, the NRWC is working to ensure the dangers of radioactive waste are managed in a responsible\, equitable\, and sustainable manner. \n \n \n \n \n \n The Coalition is made up of environmental\, anti-nuclear\, and social/environmental justice groups in the United States. \nList of member groups of National Radioactive Waste Coalition \n1) Alliance for Environmental Strategies \n2) Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League \n3) Cape Downwinders \n4) Citizens Awareness Network \n5) Citizens Action Coalition \n6) Citizens’ Environmental Coalition \n7) Citizens Resistance at Fermi Two (CRAFT) \n8) Concerned Citizens for Nuclear Safety \n9) Council on Intelligent Energy & Conservation Policy (CIECP) \n10) Fairewinds Energy Education Nonprofit \n11) Greenaction for Health and Environmental Justice \n12) Green State Solutions \n13) Healthy Environment Alliance of Utah \n14) Heart of America Northwest \n15) Hudson River Sloop Clearwater\, Inc. \n16) Indian Point Safe Energy Coalition \n17) Manhattan Project for a Nuclear-Free World \n18) Multicultural Alliance for a Safe Environment \n19) Native Community Action Council \n20) Nevada Nuclear Waste Task Force \n21) North American Water Office \n22) Nuclear Energy Information Service (NEIS) \n23) Nuclear Information and Resource Service (NIRS) \n24) Nuclear Watch New Mexico \n25) Nuclear Watch South \n26) Nukewatch \n27) Occupy Bergen County \n28) Safe Energy Rights Group (SEnRG) \n29) San Clemente Green \n30) San Luis Obispo Mothers for Peace \n31) Shut Down Indian Point Now \n32) Snake River Alliance \n33) Southwest Research and Information Center \n34) Stop the Algonquin Pipeline Expansion \n35) Sustainable Energy & Economic Development (SEED) Coalition \n36) Uranium Watch \n37) Vermont Yankee Decommissioning Alliance
