SUMMARY:Nuclear Fuel Chain Part IV: Decommissioning
DESCRIPTION:What Happens When a Nuclear Power Plant Shuts Down?\nJoin us Tuesday\, September 26th at 6:00 pm MT and find out first hand what it’s like to live in a reactor community and what happens to the people and the place after a nuclear plant shuts down. \nDeborah Katz\, CSW is executive director of Citizens Awareness Network\, a nonprofit\, grassroots New England organization fighting for clean air\, democracy\, and environmental justice. CAN was instrumental in the closure of reactors in MA\, VT and CT. Katz designed the community health study with the MA Department of Health\, organized local community participation and secured pro bono support from Harvard School of Public Health\, USGS\, Clark University\, and John Snow Institute to investigate the epidemic of disease in her community brought on by long term exposure to radioactive releases from a nuclear power reactor. She has coordinated environmental justice tours to Utah\, Nevada\, Washington\, DC and South Carolina\, three Action Camps\, and a national People’s Summits on Nuclear Waste.  Katz won a Giraffe Award for “sticking her neck out” to protect New England reactor communities.  The House of Representative from the Commonwealth of MA cited her for outstanding leadership and service in the public health field. Katz is an author who published In The Valley of the Shadow\, a picture book on the grief process for those left behind. \nRegistration is required HERE. You will receive an email with your unique zoom link. \nIf you cannot attend\, you may register anyway and either enter your question during registration or email your questions to jcross@snakeriveralliance.org. We will send all registrants a link to the recording about a week following the session.

SUMMARY:Atomic Bamboozle
DESCRIPTION:Atomic Bamboozle is a film you can’t miss.\nJoin us at the Flicks in Boise for the movie\, panel discussion and Q&A with film director Jan Haaken and more! \nStudents with valid student ID are free. General admission is $10 available at the Flicks. \nAs political pressure mounts in the US to meet net zero carbon goals\, the nuclear power industry makes its case for a nuclear “renaissance.” In place of the highly costly nuclear towers that have been shut down across many regions of the country\, investors began in the early 21st century to promote small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs). \nATOMIC BAMBOOZLE follows anti-nuclear activists and attorneys from the Columbia River region as they draw lessons from the decades-long fight to shut down the Trojan Nuclear Power plant in Oregon and reflect on current promotional campaigns by the nuclear industry and US Department of Energy.  As the industry mounts its “renaissance” with small reactors\, these anti-nuclear activists forge alliances with the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation and climate activist Cathy Sampson-Kruse (Wallulupum member of the Umatilla) who calls out the nuclear industry and politicians who are using the climate crisis to push for loosening laws restricting nuclear power generation. \nThe  arc of the film is anchored by physicist and professor M. V. Ramana\, a global leader and recognized scholar on nuclear power. He traces the history of nuclear power generation from the 1950s to the present and takes up the four main areas of concern and controversy: costs\, accidents\, waste and proliferation. \nTickets available at the Flicks!

SUMMARY:Rooftop Solar Hearing in Idaho Falls
DESCRIPTION:Rocky Mountain Power Threatens Idaho’s Solar Power!\nPublic Hearing: Voice your concerns and tell the Idaho PUC to Reject Rocky Mountain Power’s Solar Study! \nRocky Mountain Power is pushing a plan to slash compensation rates for rooftop solar owners. This plan mirrors one they successfully lobbied for in Utah\, and aims to follow in Idaho Power’s footsteps to get the PUC to approve a bad “value of solar study.” This could significantly increase the bills for Idaho residents with solar. While attacking solar and energy democracy\, RMP wants to expand\, gas\, continue burning coal\, and sprinkle that with dangerous\, expensive nuclear energy!  Here’s the dirty deal: \n\nRocky Mountain Power wants the Idaho Public Utilities Commission (PUC) to approve a misleading “value of solar study.”\nBased on this potentially flawed study\, they’ll then seek to reduce the amount homeowners are paid for the clean\, renewable energy their solar panels generate.\nThis is bad news for Idaho’s environment and your wallet. Over 2\,000 residents in the Rocky Mountain Power service area already enjoy the benefits of solar\, and this move could discourage others from following suit.\n\nThanks to the Idaho Sierra Club for the graphic\, info\, and comment portal! \nPlease share with your networks in eastern Idaho.

SUMMARY:NRC Seeking Public Comment on Environmental Review of TerraPower Construction Permit Application
DESCRIPTION:Nuclear Regulatory Commission – News Release \nNo: 24-045 June 12\, 2024 \nCONTACT: Scott Burnell\, 301-415-8200 \nThe Nuclear Regulatory Commission is seeking public input on the environmental review process for the construction permit application from TerraPower\, which seeks permission to build the company’s Natrium nuclear power plant near Kemmerer\, Wyoming. \nNRC staff members will be in Kemmerer July 16 to describe the environmental review process and gather comments on the issues that should be addressed in the review. Details for the day’s agenda are being finalized and will be available by June 25 on the TerraPower application page and the NRC’s Public Meeting Schedule. \nTerraPower\, through its subsidiary US SFR Owner\, filed the application in March\, requesting a permit to build the sodium-cooled\, advanced reactor design on a site near an existing coal-fired power plant. The 345-megawatt electric Natrium plant includes an energy storage system to temporarily boost output up to 500 MWe\, when needed. If the NRC ultimately issues the permit\, TerraPower would need to submit a separate operating license application. \nThe NRC offers several methods for filing comments on the environmental review before the Aug. 12 deadline\, as outlined in a Federal Register notice. Comments can also be submitted via regulations.gov under Docket ID NRC-2024-0078\, via email to TerraPowerEnvironmental@nrc.gov or via mail to Office of Administration\, Mail Stop TWFN-7-A60M\, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission\, Washington\, DC 20555-0001. \nA copy of the TerraPower construction permit application\, including the environmental report\, is available at the Lincoln County Library\, 519 Emerald St. in Kemmerer. \n### \nThe Snake River Alliance will work with our allies analyzing the Environmental Review and provide key points for you to use in your comments at a later time.

SUMMARY:Half-Life of Memory
DESCRIPTION:Join us!\nCelebrate the Anniversary of the Treaty for the Nonproliferation of Nuclear Weapons with us this year at the Idaho Film Society in Boise. \nWednesday\, January 22nd 6:30 pm \nThe Snake River Alliance hosts a screening of Half-Life of Memory followed by a panel discussion with director Jeff Gipe\, FBI raid leader Jon Lipsky\, and lead activist organizer in the Rocky Flats campaign Chet Tchozewski. \nTickets available at idahofilm.org. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n America’s Forgotten Atomic Bomb Factory\nIn the suburbs of Denver\, the U.S. secretly manufactured thousands of atomic weapons\, leaving behind a toxic legacy that will persist for generations.  \nThe Rocky Flats plant manufactured a staggering 70\,000 atomic bombs\, each serving as a “trigger” for thermonuclear warheads. Concealed by government secrecy\, the plant’s fires\, leaks\, and illicit dumping of nuclear waste contaminated the Denver area with long-lived radioactive toxins. \nA major—and highly visible—plutonium fire sparked a decade of mass protests\, culminating in an unprecedented FBI raid that ultimately shuttered the plant. \nAfter a multi-billion-dollar cap-and-cover effort\, the Rocky Flats site was transitioned into a national wildlife refuge. “The Most Dangerous Buildings in America” lie under six feet of soil at the heart of the refuge\, concealing a landscape still saturated with radioactive contamination. While state and federal officials claim the area is safe\, many community members and experts strongly disagree. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Today\, the radioactive legacy of Rocky Flats is invisible to the naked eye. New housing developments are engulfing areas known to be contaminated with radioactive plutonium. Thousands of former Rocky Flats workers have suffered devastating health issues from radiation exposure. Community members are investigating a potential link between Rocky Flats and troubling health reports in downwind neighborhoods. Ongoing lawsuits\, deception\, health concerns\, and persistent contamination issues continue to plague Rocky Flats\, yet the public is largely unaware of its past and its long-lived radioactive effects. \nThrough powerful testimonials and extraordinary archival media\, Half-Life of Memory exposes Rocky Flats’ dark past and enduring impact\, prompting critical reflection on the implications of the nation’s renewed nuclear weapons buildup.

SUMMARY:DC Days with the Alliance for Nuclear Accountability
DESCRIPTION:**Washington\, DC: The Heart of the Department of Energy’s Decisions**  \nThe Snake River Alliance heads to DC with the Alliance for Nuclear Accountability June 8th through 12th! \nWhile much of our work is rooted in Idaho—celebrating the precious Snake River Aquifer\, advocating for victims of radiation exposure from nuclear weapons testing\, and opposing plans to dump radioactive waste in the West—the decisions that shape nuclear policy are made in the nation’s capital. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n That’s why we’re going to DC. Each year\, we join the Alliance for Nuclear Accountability to meet with members of Congress and high-level administration officials. Our mission? To fight for policies that protect people and the planet—and stop those that don’t. \nHere’s what DC Days looks like: \n**Day 1:** Intensive training on nuclear issues and lobbying skills alongside activists nationwide. \n**Days 2–4:** Meeting with decision-makers to advocate for: \n\nProtecting our communities and environment from nuclear waste and pollution.\nEnding efforts to prop up the declining nuclear power industry.\nHalting the expansion of dangerous and costly nuclear weapons programs.\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n If you care about clean water\, responsible nuclear waste management\, and a future free from the threat of nuclear weapons\, we’d love for you to join us. \nTo get involved\, email Leigh at **lford@snakeriveralliance.org** with the subject line **DC Days**. \nTogether\, we can make sure our voices are heard where it matters most.

SUMMARY:Sunrise Vigil Honoring Hiroshima & Nagasaki
DESCRIPTION:Join the Snake River Alliance north of Boise as we gather to remember the tragic events of 80 years ago\, when U.S. nuclear weapons devastated Hiroshima and Nagasaki. \nIn a world where nuclear threats persist and violence too often goes unacknowledged\, we must confront history—not only to mourn\, but to recommit ourselves to peace. \nEvent Details:\n Date: Saturday\, August 9th\n Time: 6:15 AM (sunrise at 6:43 AM)\n Meetup Location: Dry Creek Trail parking area \nWe’ll take a short walk and share a quiet moment of reflection as the sun rises\, honoring the lives lost and reaffirming our call for a nuclear-free future. Light refreshments (coffee\, fruit\, and muffins) will be provided—please RSVP so we can plan accordingly. \nCarpooling: Need a ride or able to offer one? Let us know on the RSVP form\, and we’ll help coordinate. \nThis vigil is a small but meaningful act of remembrance and resistance.
