Snake River Alliance Internship for Idaho National Laboratory Environmental Management Outreach

Position Summary:

The Snake River Alliance seeks two interns (one in Boise and one in Pocatello) for a semester-long internship program to develop outreach on Environmental Management (EM) issues related to nuclear waste and cleanup at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL).  The two EM interns will develop a firm understanding of the key environmental issues at INL and be able to teach others about those issues. The interns will be expected to support each other’s work. The Alliance’s nuclear program director will serve as a mentor for the interns through weekly meetings. The executive director will supervise the internships. Interns will be required to design and conduct one outreach activity, attend at least one Citizens Advisory Board (CAB) meeting, help organize a tour of the INL, and write a short summary of the internship at its conclusion.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Be a currently enrolled student at an Idaho institution of higher education
  • Commit to between 10 and 20 hours of work per week
  • Be capable of energizing others through spoken, written, or graphic work
  • Be able to travel in Idaho
  • Be comfortable attending technical and policy meetings with government entities
  • Have excellent communication skills
  • Be a self-starter
  • Have some experience in organizing meetings or events
  • Be comfortable working in a collaborative manner with others

Environmental issues at INL can be approached from a number of perspectives: scientific, social, economic, historical, etc. A variety of media can be used to convey perspectives. All areas of interest are welcome, but a firm understanding of the issues will be required at the conclusion of the project.
