Summary of Occurrence Reports

March 18: During maintenance work on a crane in the CPP-603 Facility at the Idaho Nuclear Technology and Engineering Center, workers identified several bolts in the crane’s seismic restraint clips that do not have adequate documentation to verify that they meet design requirements. All spent nuclear fuel handling activities in the facility were placed on hold pending resolution of the issue.

Operational Status

Waste Shipments: Through March 11, 2006, the Advanced Mixed Waste Treatment Facility has sent 6,372 cubic meters of transuranic waste to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in New Mexico for disposal. Combined with the 3,100 cubic meters of waste shipped prior to AMWTP startup, Idaho has shipped almost 9,472 cubic meters of waste to WIPP for disposal.

Nuclear Energy

Summary of Occurrence Reports

March 16: A bus driver fractured his leg after slipping on ice near the Central Facilities
Areas Transportation Complex. The driver was treated at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center. (NE-ID-BEA-ATR-2006-0003)

March 16: Primary coolant water leaked from a pump seal at the Advanced Test Reactor on March 13. The reactor was shut down for maintenance prior to the leak. The leaking pump was secured and isolated, appropriate notifications made and a critique was held. No personnel werecontaminated and there was no release of contamination.

Operational Status

National Security Honors: Idaho National Laboratory was honored recently by Congressman Dan Lungren, chairman of the House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Economic Security, Infrastructure Protection, and Cybersecurity. INL was recognized for its research work in protecting control system security, and for its development of test beds and infrastructure protection.
