Idaho Energy Update Aug. 15: Nuke Plant Backer Seeks Elmore County Rezone posted 8/15/2008
The developer of the proposed Idaho nuclear reactor finally filed his application to rezone the property in Elmore County, beginning what is expected to be a long haul for all parties as Idaho decides whether to cast its lot with nuclear power or whether to embrace sustainable energy resources. Meanwhile, the Public Utilities Commission has approved Idaho Power’s request to import more than 80MW of pretty expensive power from Montana during Idaho’s peak season, and Rocky Mountain Power and the PUC are looking for public comment on a proposed transmission line in SE Idaho.

More good news on Idaho’s wind front, as Bingham County iapproved two wind projects this week, including the too-long-delayed Wolverine Canyon project by Ridgeline. Also, Idaho Power is asking the PUC to approve its plan to deploy new “smart meters” across its service territory. And the PUC has accepted Idaho Power’s plan to buy power from a dairy digester. Finally, the media is reporting on the mounting problems facing the company that hopes to build a nuclear reactor in Idaho.
Audit Casts Cloud on Idaho Nuke Plant Developer’s Finances posted 8/8/2008
A new audited financial statement for the company hoping to build a nuclear reactor south of Mountain Home in Idaho portrays a company in deep financial trouble, running up debt while failing to attract the huge cash infusions required to build an energy project that has states like Florida reeling from costs as high as $14 billion.
Idaho Energy Update Aug. 1: Good Efficiency News, Less So On Rates posted 8/1/2008
Idaho Power told the Securities and Exchange Commission its credit rating is taking a beating because the company has struggled to recover rising power costs. Meanwhile, the PUC has set an Aug. 8 deadline for those wanting to intervene in Idaho Power’s rate case. And Avista Corp., which serves much of north Idaho, came in with its own power cost adjustment that could lead to a rate hike. The good news: The Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance issued its annual report, which shows greater-than-expected energy efficiency gains across our region.
